Gluing, gluing, gluing

That's what I did today. I've been reflecting my use of paper and ink. I feel it goes together with my artistic path like a fist with a face. The semiotics of paper and ink you know? East Asian, not burdened with 600 years of European oil painting tradition, but with about 1900 years of East Asian. T´sai Lun invented paper during Han dynasty around the year 105 CE. Oldest surviving ink paintings on paper date back to Sui dynasty ca. 600 CE. Oldest surviving paintings on silk are even older. Ink and paper carries with it a tradition of representing the emptiness. Black in all of its gray shades is considered the synthesis of all colors. A traditional Chinese landscape painting represents Taoist principles and its view on reality. Concepts, language, are added as a layer on the painting. Far away seems closer than objects that are naturally near the viewer. These are my artsy thoughts today. Let's get back to this later.

Tänään siis liimasin. Olen reflektoinut paperin ja musteen käyttöäni. Minusta se sopii taiteelliseen polkuuni, kuin nyrkki silmään. Paperin ja musteen semiotiikka, tiedättehän? Itä-Aasialainen perinne jota ei paina 600-vuotinen eurooppalainen öljymaalaustaiteen perinne, vaan n. 1900-vuotinen itä-aasialainen perinne. T´sai Lun keksi paperin vuonna 105, Han-dynastian aikaan. Vanhimmat säilyneet tussimaalaukset paperille ovat 600-luvulta, Sui-dynastian ajalta. Vanhimmat säilyneet silkkimaalaukset ovat vielä vanhempia. Muste ja paperi kantaa mukanaan tyhjyyden esittämisen taidetta. Mustaa ja sen harmaan sävyjä pidetään kaikkien värien summana. Perinteinen kiinalainen maisemamaalaus esittää taolaisen todellisuuskäsityksen periaatteita. Käsitteet, kieli, on lisätty maalaukseen omaan tasoonsa. Kaukaisuus näyttää lähemmältä, kuin katsojaa normaalisti lähempänä olevat kohteet. Nämä ovat tämän päivän taiteelliset ajatukseni. Palataan aiheeseen myöhemmin.

Grant applications

Today I did a grant application. Here's the work from yesterday. It's just a bigger version of Artist's Prints. This has not yet been pasted properly together. Ink on Japanese paper, 132 x 128 cm, 2010.

Getting bigger

Did a bigger version of Artists' Prints (132 x 128 cm). Posting some kind of pic tomorrow. What the heck, let's go bankrupt.

New final work and an update on my monetary gain of working part-time jobs. And some moaning about the stature of paper as a medium in art.

Cutted and pasted together and took a picture. Nameless(mv), ink on Japanese paper, 120 x 110 cm.

I just calculated how much I benefited monetarily from my part-time jobs as a personal aid to a young man with cp, substitute teacher and as an art school teacher during 15.9.2009-31.5.2010 compared to total unemployment. The final sum is 83.31€/month (net). Yippekayee society! This is current cos' society want's me to pay some living benefits back (1500€).

I also asked a price for framing some of my upcoming exhibitions paintings. Result: 943€. And more paintings on paper are coming. Is there any monetary sense in using paper? It is undervalued compared to canvases, and despite framing, paintings on paper cost less than traditional canvases of the same size. I have a grant of 1000€ for gallery rent, vernissage card printing/posting, vernissage catering (free booze for the crowd) and transporting the art. Nice!

This is the price of identifying yourself as an artist, and doing your work.

Leikkasin ja liimasin kasaan, ja otin kuvan. Nimetön(mv), muste japaninpaperille, 120 x 110 cm.

Laskeskelin juuri kuinka paljon hyödyin rahallisesti osa-aika töistäni henkilökohtaisena avustajana cp-vammaiselle nuorelle miehelle, sijaisopettajana ja taidekoulun opettajana, verrattuna täyteen työttömyyteen ajalla 15.9.2009-31.5.2010. Tulos: 83,31€/kk (netto). Jippii yhteiskunta! Tämä on ajankohtaista, koska minulta peritään 1500€ asumistukea takaisin.

Kysyin hintaa teosteni kehystykselle tulevaa näyttelyäni varten. Hintaa tulee 943€ ja lisää teoksia on tulossa. Onko paperille tekemisessä mitään rahallista järkeä? Normaalille kangaspohjalle tehdystä maalauksesta maksetaan enemmän kuin samankokoisesta kehystetystä paperityöstä. Minulla on 1000€ apuraha näyttelyvuokriin, kutsukortin painatukseen/postitukseen, avajaiskuluihin (ilmaista viinaa avajaisvieraille) ja teosten kuljetuksiin. Kivaa!

An ordinary day in an artists life

The very usual day: Some ink lines and gluing which seemed to work.

Lately I've had problems with our welfare society. Being an artist sucks occasionally. The only way to manage seems to be that you have a nice part time job that pays well and then you just squeeze the rest of your life juice to the canvas (or paper, or what ever). I had several part time jobs and I got a reduced unemployment benefits to make the end's meet. Well then my other benefits for living were reduced cos of the jobs and now after my calculations I got 150€/month (net) extra compared to being just unemployed the whole time. Considering to what I did for that money, it was a tough 150 €. Fuck you society!

After my next exhibition in november I'll just have to put my thinking cap on and come up with a solution of some kind. But in my experience thinking doesen't help, only doing.

Työhuoneella hyvin tavallinen päivä: Musteviivoja ja liimausta.

Minulla on ollut hiljattain ongelmia hyvinvointivaltiomme kanssa. Taiteilijana oleminen haisee ajoittain. Parasta on jos on samalla mukavassa osa-aikatyössä, josta saa hyvin rahaa. Työpäivän jälkeen puristetaan viimeisetkin elämänmehut kankaalle, paperille, tai mille lie. Olihan mulla osa-aikatöitä ja sain vielä työkkäriäkin, mut kaikki tulot vaikutti asumisen tukeen, joten jäljelle jäi 150 € netto/kk verrattuna täyteen työttömyyteen. Motivoi ihan vitusti, kun miettii mitä sai sen eteen tehdä. Haistappa yhteiskunta paska!

Seuraavan marraskuussa olevan näyttelyni jälkeen on laitettava mietintämyssy päähän ja saada aikaan jokin ratkaisu nykyiseen tilanteeseen. Vaikka kokemukseni mukaan ajattelu ei auta, vaan tekeminen.

Bad day

This did not glue ok. I just posted this pic to have an illusion that I achived something today. I pretty much screwed up everything I tried to do. Ink on Japanese paper, ca. 110 x 118 cm.

Tämän liimaus ei onnistunut. Laitoin kuvan vain luullakseni saaneeni jotain aikaan. Munasin kaikessa mitä yritin. Muste japaninpaperille, n 110 x 118 cm.

Problems of reproduction

Here's the succesful gluing result in different lightning conditions. Reproducing these pieces is always quite hard. Tomorrow I'll pohoto another piece that I glued today...I hope. The glue was a bit too thin so I might have to glue some areas again.

Tässäpä onnistunut teos(liimaus) eri valaistusolosuhteissa. Näiden teosten valokuvaus on aina vähän haasteellista. Huomenna valokuvaan toivottavasti työn jonka liimasin tänään. Liima oli vähän laihaa ja saatan päästä paikkailemaan kupruja.

Yesterdays results

Did 81 cm of this painting seen above. Black ink on black paper. Size of paper ca. 110 x 110 cm.

Tein ylhäällä näkyvää työtä 81 cm. Musta muste mustalle paperille. Paperin koko n. 110 x 110 cm.

9.57 to 15.03

The upper work is waiting to be glued. Ca. 112 x 109 cm, ink on Japanese paper. The gluing that I waited fearfully succeeded partly and I took the paper of from the board. I'll make a similar new work tomorrow. The black paper gets bigger from the original 110 x 110 cm size when wet and remains so, so I'll make the next painting a bit smaller for it to fit a 110 x 110 cm board exactly. Elementry my dear Watson. I will also stain less with the glue - it leaves marks on the wrong side. The second picture is the work in question and it has been taken from a low angle and edited to a rectangle with Photoshop.

Ylempi teos odottaa liimausta. N. 112 x 109 cm, muste japaninpaperille. Pelätty liimaus onnistui melko mukavasti, mutta otin teoksen kumminkin irti levyltä. Huomenna teen uuden, josta tulee vähän levyä pienempi, koska märkä paperi kastuu liimauksessa ja laajenee, ja jää turvonneeseen mittaansa. Elementry my dear Watson. Sottaan myös vähemmän liimalla kuvapuolella. Jättää nimittäin tummia tahrakohtia jostain syystä.

I'm on a working streak

Results of today. Upper two pics are the same work, the lighter pic is just the original from reverse side. So it's just the bleed throughs showing. I like it more than the intented work. Notice that this is still an incoplete work. Measures: ca. 73 x 110 cm, ink on Japanese paper. Wider painting is the one made yesterday (titled '16 lines') and glued together today. Measures: ca. 138 x 164 cm, ink on Japanese paper. I glued a 110 x 110 cm work (black ink on black paper) on a piece of 3 mm mdf just as I left the studio. I dreadfully wait tomorrow so I'll see how it went. Shall the board bent a lot?

Tämän päivän tuloksia. Kaksi ylintä kuvaa ovat samasta työstä, mutta vaaleampi on alkuperäisen teoksen takapuoli. Tässä näkee kuinka muste läpäisee ohuen paperin. Vaaleampi on ehkä parempi. Mitat: n. 73 x 110 cm, muste japaninpaperille. Huomatkaa että teos on vielä kesken. Leveämpi maalaus on '16 lines', jonka tein eilen ja liimasin kasaan tänään. Mitat: n. 138 x 164 cm, muste japaninpaperille. Liimasin työhuoneelta lähtiessäni yhden 110 x 110 cm työn (musta muste mustalle paperille) 3 mm mdf -levylle. Kauhulla odotan huomista ja liimauksen kuivimista: vetääkö käppyrälle?

Work, work....work

I glued the big work shown in yesterdays post and did the first part of a possible painting. Ink on Japanese paper. Size ca. 28 x 110 cm.

Liimasin eilisen postauksen ison työn kasaan ja tein ensimmäisen osan mahdollisesti valmistuvasta maalauksesta. Muste japaninpaperille. Koko n. 28 x 110 cm.

It hurts

Got to gluing with the new glue, which became more watery than the previous cooks. Seems to hold anyhow. Did 7 x 110 cm of questionmarks. It really sucks the energy out of me and makes my arm hurt. Due to intence consentration and bad working position?

Pääsin liimaamaan uudella liimalla, joka on edellisiä satseja ohuempaa. Näyttää kumminkin pitävän. Tein 7 x 110 cm alan kysymysmerkkejä. Se imaisee kaiken energian ja kipeyttää käden. Johtunee liian kovasta keskittymisestä ja huonosta työasennosta?

Yet again

The wheat glue had gone bad so I didn't get to work on Slashflag for which I made new parts... again. Instead I continued Questioning in Gold. Last saturday I streched a big piece of Canson and worked with Illustrator to do...illustrations. I'll post an image. This evenings program includes making (not sniffing) some glue. I haven't recently had any deep artistic thoughts so I can't entertain you with any, my dear reader.

Liima oli taas pilalla joten en päässyt tekemään Slashflagia, johon olen taas tehnyt uusia osia. Jatkoin siis Questioning in Goldia. Lauantaina pingotin ison palan Cansonia ja piirtelin kotona Illustrator-ohjelmalla. Postaan kuvan. Tämän illan ohjelma sisältää liiman keittelyä (ei haistelua). Minulla ei ole ollut viime aikoina mitään syvällisisä taidepohdintoja, joten en voi teitä rakkaat lukijat niillä nyt viihdyttää.

More like it

Heres the unlucky gluing session from yesterday. Today went better: the glued white part could look nicer, but I might pass it this time. I also wiped some of the Questioning in Gold away, so now it's under work again.

Yllä kuva eilisestä epäonnistumisesta (vai onnistumisesta?). Tänään meni paremmin. Jeejee. Valkean osan liimaus voisi olla onnistuneempi, mutta saatan antaa sen olla. Questioning in Gold on taas työn alla, pyyhin n. vaaksan mittaisen osan pois.

Double blah

Tried the gluing part again. Didn't work. The black piece of paper colors the white pieces corner a bit yellowish. And the backing paper didn't attach eavenly, it creased a bit. We can also add a flying glue jar and a toppled water container to the scene (accidents, didn't throw anything). Well then I just did another pieces for Shlashflag...again (3rd version). I also streched a new backing paper (Canson 220g/m2, 150 x 150 cm). Thank you Joko Beck.

Yritin taas liimata. Ei toiminut taaskaan. Musta japaninpaperi värjää valkean japaninpaperin sivua hieman keltaiseksi. Aluspaperikin meni vähän ryppyyn. Lisätkää vielä mielikuvaan kaatunut vesipullo ja ilmassa lentävä liima-astia (vahinkoja, en heitellyt). Noh sittenpä tein kolmannen version Slahflagista ja pingotin uuden aluspaperin (Canson 220g/m2, 150 x 150 cm). Kiitos Joko Beck.
