Aaargh!

Stept on a corner of my Questioning in Gold-painting. It fractured. Months work almost wasted...but I was able to repair it. Left early cos I didin't want to break anything else.

Astuin maalauksen kulman päälle. Kuukauden työ meinasi mennä hukkaan. Onneksi osasin korjata. Lähdin ajoissa etten hajoittaisi enää mitään muuta.

Entropy

A normal day at the studio. Doing the daily 110 x 110 x 6 cm lines of question marks. It's back breaking and tedious work. After that I did some testing with ink fingering. A friend of mine dropt over and we viewed some of my work that I'll show in an upcoming solo exhibition at Helsinki City Art Museums Kluuvi Gallery in november.

We discussed alot about the entropy in my works and about some symbols that I've lately added to the list of repeatable things/shapes. I might try dice throwing to guide me in my compositions. It increases the natural entropy that I like. I've got second thoughts about advancing to more specific concepts...it would better serve the core of my ideology not to play with too much concepts. The fingerprint has meanings but they seem vague enough in their semiotics. A question mark is more specific. Well, thats why I chose it.

A colleague of mine (www.jaakkomattila.fi) compared my work with Lee U-Fan's work. Very similar and interesting. I instantly became a fan. I've seen a work of his in an art book about six years ago. I had since forgotten all about it.

Normipäivä työhuoneella. 6 cm kysymysmerkkejä muutamaan tuntiin, sen jälkeen testailuja. Työ on hyvin hidasta ja uuvuttavaa. Kaveri piipahti ja katselimme joitakin maalauksia joita ajattelin laittaa marraskuussa Kluuvin galleriassa olevaan näyttelyyni. Keskustelimme lähinnä sommittelun entropiasta ja symbolien merkityksistä. Saatan kokeilla nopanheittoa sommittelun ohjaajana, mikä lisäisi sattumaa. Sormenjäljet vaikuttavat riittävän hämäriltä merkityksissään, eivätkä tuo mukaan liikaa käsitteillä kikkailua, joka voi hyvin heikentää maalausideologiani henkeä. Kysymysmerkki on merkityksiltäään ladatumpi. Mutta siksipä sen valitsinkin.

Eräs kollegani (www.jaakkomattila.fi) vertasi teoksiani Lee U-Fanin teoksiin. Ne ovat hyvin samanhenkisiä. Aloin heti fanittamaan. Olin niitä aikaisemminkin jossain taidekirjassa nähnyt, mutta olin sittemmin ne tyystin unohtanut.

Thinking outside the studio

I try to keep out from my art work during weekends, at least physical work, but still my head keeps working. I've been reading this book Seven Days in the Art World by Sarah Thorthon (link below). I enthusiastically recommend! The art world here in Finland is quite low beat compared to Ms. Thorthons experiences. Ms. Thortons account of the art world is set on the very top of the food chain. The book represents the jetset, blue chip and the ivy league of the art world. It also depicts the much coveted goal for many, many artists. It would be very applaudable and down to earth to make an account of the "propellor set" of the art world (I haven't even been in a plane in six years).

Considering art making, I've always felt that art about art is quite dry and distanced from reality. Though some times it may keep things more true. I came to this conclusion when I viewed my own motivation to make art. It's about silence, precence, the non-verbalizable and even mystical. The danger in this is that you loose the sight of the earth under your feet and you ascend to a negetive transcendency and aloof mental states. I hope to avoid that. In order to enjoy life and the arts one must emotionally empathise and experience. Too much rationality distances us from the whole. One must find a balance between these things.

Vaikka yritän jättää taidetyöni viikonlopuiksi, pääni jatkaa hommaa. Tällä viikolla olen lukenut Sarah Thortonin "Seven Days in the Art World"-kirjaa (linkki yllä). Suosittelen lämpimästi. Kirja kuvaa taiteilijoiden ja taidemaailman ravintoketjun huippua, mutta kertomuksia voi jossain määrin ehkä soveltaa myös Suomen pienimuotoiseen taidemaailmaan. Olisi hyvä jos joku kirjoittaisi rupusakistakin, johon myös allekirjoittanut ja suurin osa maailman taiteilijoista kuuluu.

Asiasta raivaustraktori. Olen aina suhtautunut hieman negatiivisesti taiteeseen joka kommentoi taidetta . Sillä voi olla kumminkin tehtävä pitää monen mystisen fiilistelijän jalat maassa. Oma taiteeni käsittelee hiljaisuutta, läsnäoloa ja sanallistamatonta - mystistäkin. Sen negatiivinen puoli voi olla se, että uppoutuminen nostaa pään pilviin, erilaisten ihmeellisten tajunnantilojen sfääriin: Fiilistely vie mukanaan ja muuttuu negatiiviseksi transendenssiksi. Eläytyminen on oleellista ja liika rationalisoiminen estää sen, pitäisi löytää sopiva tasapaino.

Friday/Perjantai

I was at my studio for about 5 hours. I continued a 110 x 110 cm painting that I've been making for at least a month now. I'll post a pic some day. It's composed of small question marks that seem like golden rain. After that I tested on a new idea called Artist's Prints. They are made in ink or watercolor on japanese and western paper pressing with my index finger. If the paint runs out from my finger I'll dip it again. It creates a nice natural flow in the analytical composition. I'm trying to renew my painting practise to a more conceptual side...or at least for now. My plans keep changing alot. One day I'll stick in what I know and on another day I'm screaming for a change. The pieces look like minimalism but there is some subject matter of painters identity and asian vs. western painting traditions. Not forgetting enthropy and the natural laws playing quite visibly. I'm also quite new in using color cos my paintings are usually made in silver, gold or black and white.

Viisi tuntia työhuoneella perjantaina. Ensin tein suurempaa maalusta, jota olenkin tehnyt yli kuukauden. Pieniä kultaisia kysymysmerkkejä, jotka näyttävät tippuvan. Sen jälkeen testailin mustavalkeilla mustesormenpainalluksilla ja värillisillä vesiväripainalluksilla. Mustavalkeat työt on tehty japaninpaperille ja värilliset akvarellipaperille. Minimalismilta näyttää, mutta sormenjäljet ja media tuovat mukaan uusia sisällöllisiä elementtejä kuten taiteilijaidentiteetin ja aasialaisen/länsimaisen taiteen perinteen. Yritän viedä työskentelyäni käsitteellisempään suuntaan, mutta ensi viikolla voi olla jo eri ääni kellossa ja pitäydyn tiukasti vanhassa...mene ja tiedä.
